Section 1: The Transition from JCAT to PGET in CIP
Following official notifications from the Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education Department (SHC&MED) Government of Punjab, the Joint Competency Assessment Test (JCAT) was formally discontinued and replaced by the Postgraduate Entrance Test (PGET) conducted by the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore.
For Level-III clinical postgraduate inductions (FCPS-II, MD, MS, MDS), PGET is now the primary entrance benchmark. Admission into paid residency posts in tertiary healthcare institutions across Punjab is determined strictly through the centralized merit algorithm.
Section 2: CIP Level-III 100-Point Aggregate Formula
Your final merit position out of 100 total marks is derived using three weighted components:
UHS PGET Score
Aggregated from Paper I (100 MCQs, Basic Sciences) and Paper II (100 MCQs, Specialty-Specific). Total test out of 200 marks scaled to 75 points.
MBBS / BDS Academics
Percentage aggregate across all Professional Examinations (1st Prof through Final Prof) scaled down to 20 points.
House Job & Distinctions
Points awarded for completing PM&DC recognized 1-year house job in parent teaching hospital and verified board/university academic distinctions.
Because PGET accounts for 75 out of 100 aggregate points, a 10-point improvement in your PGET score adds 7.5 marks directly to your final merit—far outweighing small differences in undergraduate graduation percentages.
Section 3: The 75th Percentile Cutoff Standard
One of the most critical aspects of PGET is its norm-referenced passing standard. Unlike undergraduate exams where 50% is a pass, CIP mandates that candidates must score at or above the 75th percentile of their specialty cohort.
Understanding Percentile vs Percentage:
- Percentage: The raw fraction of questions you answered correctly (e.g., 140 / 200 = 70%).
- 75th Percentile: You must score higher than 75% of all candidates who sat the same examination track. Only the top 25% of test takers qualify for clinical merit list placement.
Because of this competitive filter, scoring 65% or 70% raw marks may still leave you below the threshold if the overall cohort performs strongly. Consistent daily timed practice is mandatory.
Section 4: Domicile Rules & Regional Quotas (AJK, GB, ICT)

PGET vs CPSP / FCPS-I Induction Clarity
Candidates frequently inquire if passing PGET waives the FCPS Part 1 exam or CPSP enrollment.
The Official Reality: PGET does NOT replace FCPS-I or CPSP registration. Candidates pursuing FCPS-II training in Punjab Government teaching hospitals must pass PGET to secure a paid training slot via CIP, alongside their existing CPSP eligibility.
